What is website accessibility, and why is it important?

Website accessibility is the practice of designing and developing websites that everyone, including people with disabilities, can use. It ensures that individuals with visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, and neurological disabilities can access, navigate, and interact with content online. Accessibility is crucial because it helps ensure equal opportunities for all, making your website inclusive and usable by a wider audience.

How does making a website accessible benefit my business?

Making your website accessible not only helps comply with legal requirements, but it also expands your audience. An accessible website ensures that people with disabilities can use your site comfortably, which can increase engagement, customer loyalty, and ultimately, sales. By improving accessibility, you also show that your business is committed to inclusivity and social responsibility.

By 2025, Ireland will require all public sector websites and apps to be accessible to people with disabilities. This is in line with the European Union’s Web Accessibility Directive, which mandates that public websites and mobile apps must meet specific accessibility standards. As a business, adopting accessible design now will not only prepare you for compliance but will also demonstrate your commitment to inclusivity.

What are some common accessibility challenges people face on websites?

Visual disabilities:

Difficulty reading text or viewing images without alternative text or screen reader compatibility.

Auditory disabilities: Lack of captions or sign language support in videos.

Cognitive disabilities: Complex navigation or confusing website structure.

Physical disabilities: The inability to use a mouse due to motor difficulties makes keyboard navigation essential.

Neurological disabilities: Websites with animations that trigger seizures or other adverse reactions.

How can ISL interpreting video production enhance website accessibility?

ISL (Irish Sign Language) interpreting video production makes video content accessible to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Adding an ISL interpreter to videos on your website ensures that individuals who use Irish Sign Language can understand your content, whether it’s a promotional video, tutorial, or informational video. This not only improves accessibility but also shows your commitment to inclusivity.

St. Doulagh’s Church

St. Doulagh’s Church in Kinsealy in North Dublin is a medieval church with lots of historical value. With the beginning of the major restoration of the church, the Lensmen team were able to preserve the rich and unique history of St. Doulagh’s Church by creating a virtual walkthrough and video tour of the church. At Lensmen, we developed an amazing time displaying the various distinct attributes of St. Doulagh’s. Our team can also film and embed videos into virtual tours allowing you to click through the tour with clickable hotspots.

Built-in 1812, the Round Round at the Mansion House celebrates its 200th anniversary with an exhibition displaying the Round Room’s role in multiple historic moments in Irish life. The Virtual Tour allows the organisers to have an interactive memory of the unique collection and the immersive exhibition experience on their website for those who may not have been able to attend the in-person event. Lensmen are experts in virtual walkthroughs, and our helpful team is always happy to answer any questions; contact us on info@lensmen.ie
